Outlander accounts for 43% of UK EV sales in June 2014

TheGreenCarWebsite.co.uk: Mitsubishi Outlander plug-in hybrid tops UK electric car sales.

Mitsubishi’s new Outlander became the top-selling plug-in car in the UK last month – claiming 43 per cent of all applications to the Plug-in Car Grants scheme during July.

Despite a good dose of new plug-in car models launched in the UK in recent months including BMW i3, Tesla Model S and Volkswagen e-up!, the Mitsubishi Outlander is stealing a lead on them.

Key to its success is likely its price is closely matched to a standard diesel Outlander, once the Government’s £5,000 Plug-in Car Grant is deducted.

Priced from £28,249 after the £5,000 grant, the PHEV costs much the same as the automatic Outlander GX3 diesel.

Also to its benefit is its range – as a plug-in hybrid, with a battery pack and a 2.0-litre petrol engine engine – the Outlander PHEV achieves a total range of 512 miles. On electric power alone it can achieve a respectable 32 miles – enough for a typical morning commute.

Despite its vast size and four wheel drive, the Outlander PHEV is also rated with an official fuel economy figure of 148mpg on a combined cycle and emissions of just 44g/km CO2.

It has already proved popular in other parts of Europe including theNetherlands and Norway, where demand was so high, it was partially blamed for a delayed UK launch.

Originally planned for launch in the UK late last year, when the PHEV finally made it here in April, Mitsubishi quickly found a warm welcome here too.

With around 929 Plug-in Car Grants claimed during July alone, Mitsubishi must have sold around 399 PHEVs last month.

According to the latest data of new car sales from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), there has been an 805 per cent increase in plug-in hybrid car sales last month compared to the same month of 2013; driven by the arrival of the likes of the BMW i3 range-extended car and the Outlander. Official figures say 552 plug-in hybrids sold last month, compared to 61 in July 2013.

Sales of fully electric cars are up 89 per cent from 264 in July 2013 to 500 in July 2014. The overall new car market grew 6.6 per cent last month, with 172,907 new cars registered through July in the UK, the 29th consecutive month of growth for the UK market.

Since the launch of the Plug-In Car Grant in January 2011, SMMT data says there have been 11,184 eligible cars registered.
