Is Nissan exploring a low cost electric car for India?

Indiacarsbikes.in reports: The high price of electric cars is due to the costly lithium ion batteries used in these cars. These batteries alone can make up for more than half the cost of the electric cars. Despite costing so much, the existing lithium ion battery technology adds a lot of weight and doesn’t provide a range of more than 200 kilometers on a single charge.

A high price and limited battery range means that electric cars are not as popular as conventional internal combustion engine powered cars. Therefore, electric vehicles haven’t found acceptance among car buyers in most parts of the world. The problem gets magnified in the developing world, where affordability is an even bigger concern.

To work around this, Nissan is looking at low cost electric car options for developing markets. Nissan is working with Thunder Motors, an electric car company that is based out of Bhutan. Thunder Motors has started testing a low cost electric car. Nissan will provide its assistance in terms of technology and R&D to Thunder Motors.

The electric car that Thunder Motors is developing is mainly meant for the Bhutan market. With Nissan also being involved in the project, India could also get this low cost electric car. The low cost car will be priced at less than Rs. 10 lakhs. The aim is to price the low cost car half as much as the Nissan Leaf. Nissan has not announced when the low cost electric car will be launched in Bhutan or India. As the car is still in prototype stage, it should take a couple of years at least.
